[Report] Beter Kom Je Niet vs. Day-Mar

Party report of Beter Kom je Niet vs Day-Mar
Date: 22-01-2011
Location: North Sea Venue, Zaandam

A decade ago Lady Dana was known to be the hardest lady between all men in the hardcore scene. But as times change so do the people who are important for that period. Lady Dana vanished from the hardcore stages and a new girl got the chance to fill up that spot and grew out to be one of the best female dj’s we have nowadays. Don’t underestimate her skills and enthusiasm. Behind the decks this iron lady rules like an empress. Her name…. Day-Mar!

She started DJing around 2003 and from then on she got to spin her records at the best parties all over the world. Besides being a great DJ, she also produces her own records. Tracks like “No Prada”, “Embrace the Night”, “Guess what”, “KO”, “Pole Position” and “Screwdriver are well known and appreciated by the audience.
However, a 6 hour non-stop DJ-gig still remained a challenge. So when she was offered to do the main-stage during the next “Beter Kom Je Niet vs” it was an offer she couldn’t refuse.

The last couple of months it became clear this wouldn’t be just another party. This would be a horrific, terrifying evening, clouded in fog and filled with tiny poisonous spiders. Day-Mar would bring her friends and create her own little empire.

Finally it was the 22nd of January. We jumped in our car, pulled open a can of red bull, dropped some industrial in the cd-player and were off to Zaandam. Although we arrived quite early, lots of guests were waiting outside the North Sea Venue already. It took us about 30 minutes to enter. The security and hostesses at the guest-entrance were nice and helpful. After receiving our press-band it was time to look around and get some coins. The thirst had to be quenched.

We entered the main hall which looked like a big old barn with all the spiders hanging from the ceiling and in their webs. Behind the main stage hang a large canvas with pictures of Day-Mar looking in different directions. Later that evening we noticed that one of the lasers came through a small gap in that canvas.
Dj Mobius was warming up the crowd with some loud and speedy hardcore. A few minutes later at 11 o’clock the other three rooms were opened as well and the party could really start.

We decided to take a look at the BKJN-area. The dj-booth was approximately 2,5 meters high with the BKJN-logo’s placed on both sides of it. The sound was incredible in this hall; Hard but pure. Tha Playah had just started his set when we entered. His hit “Imperial” is still like a nuclear bomb, making the crowd go crazy. To get a good impression of the whole place we decided to take a look in the Speedcore and French-core rooms as well. The speedcore room, located just between the main stage and the BKJN area, was like a decadent renaissance room with its chandeliers and red lights everywhere. DJ Stinger just played Satronica’s “Fuck the System” above normal speed which sounded really great. After that we went on checking out the other small room where Dr peacock had started.

The energy and vibe were really positive in this room. Everybody was going crazy. We only recognized some samples within the music and were surprised to hear the crossover from “Cocaine” to the sweet innocence of Lollipop (like in the commercial of Dell computers). Put those together with a ongoing bass line and the room explodes.
We also enjoyed the first 15 minutes of Meagashira, with “Lady Alzheimer” a great up-lifting party track, before we went back to the main stage where Day-Mar would start her non-stop 6 hour set.
She started with half an hour of her own tracks like “Black Widow”, “Embrace the Night” and “Screwdriver”. After these first 30 minutes Tymon joined Day-Mar and they treated us with a great industrial set combined with the techno/schranz of Day-Mar. Both energetic as entertaining. Halfway their set, they chose to play a record which contained a melodic, classical piano part. Very refined and original.

The lighting and visual effects were also very impressive. Together with the decorations, the multi-coloured laser and other effects like flame throwers and smoke machines created a awesome show.
The next dj we did not want to miss was DJ Mad Dog. This Italian entertainer had already started in the BKJN area. The area was completely loaded with people going out of their minds. Mad Dog played an energetic set with tracks like “Different breed of Men”, “The next level” and “Attack” with its metal intro. Together with the next dj, Tommyknocker, they covered half the track list of “Hardcore Italia”. All great tracks passed by as well as a track that we hadn’t heard for a long time: the remix of “DJ Weirdo & Sim - Go get busy”. A track that really creates a good vibe is “Negative A - B Positive” based on Mobys “Feeling so Real”. No wonder we heard this track more than once that night.

After a while we decided to go back through the speedcore area where ‘Speedkore’ was performing Live. It was terribly crowded and hot in that area so we didn’t want to stay long even though the music was very entertaining. We continued and got us some drinks and enjoyed the sound of Day-Mar and Negative A at the back ground.
In the “Beter donker dan Licht” area we checked out Cardiak. With an incredible tempo he rocked the place. Though most tracks were unknown to us, we enjoyed his set. And with us most people did, when judging the smiles on their faces.

After Cardiak we went to Endymion vs Nosferatu. These masters did an old fashion back-2-back-set with excellent mixing. Enjoyable to see and they both enjoyed it as well. Their set was full of new ‘lesser known’ tracks and of course the familiar party tracks. They build their set up from normal mainstream hardcore (“Refly” and “Justice”) to more energetic tracks like “Abandon”, “Beat is pumping”, “Compagneros - Endymion Remix” and “Alles naar de Klote”. We really enjoyed this set.

At 4:45 we returned at the main stage, just on time to see Outblast end his set with tracks like: ”Desolution”, “Jiiieehaaaa” and “Creative Counter”.
The last battle on the main stage was between Unexist and Day-Mar. They had already done a back 2 back set a few years ago during Thunderdome Fight Night. We expected a wall of sound but they started just a bit rougher than the previous set. At 5:30 we decided to leave, just before the end, to avoid a massive crowd at the exit.

“Beter Kom Je Niet events” did a good job in Zaandam. They threw a well organized party with a wide range of dj’s and acts. The atmosphere was great all night long. We saw a lot of visitors with a big smile on their face and dancing their ass off. The only thing we missed, were the line-ups of the several areas. Or we just didn’t see them hanging. Maybe something to hand out at when entering the party.
BKJN….see you next time.
