[Report] PRSPCT
Whenever official holidays like Ascension Day come up, you know it’s time for another exciting XL-edition of PRSPCT. After visiting last year’s edition in the now closed WATT, it was time to witness the dream: PRSPCT in the legendary Maassilo, an industrial location in the harbor of Rotterdam with massive areas and a relentless sound system.
Unfortunately, upon arrival it had already turned out a bit disappointing. Signs directed us to the right side of the building, which meant the party would not take place in the Maassilo, but in the Factory 010 (the upper floor of the venue). After taking the elevator to the 10th floor, we got some drink tokens (8 for € 20) and entered the main area, where of course the style was drum & bass. The sound was great and we were impressed by the fact that two extra stacks of speakers had been placed towards the back of the area, near the bar. The hardcore area was located at the right side when walking through the small corridors right behind the main area. The sound was loud but the bass was cracking, which was a real bummer for Dissolvement, who was playing at the time. On the other side was the dubstep area which has never been bigger. In both areas, the windows had been dressed by camouflage netting, a good way to keep the early sunlight out. Those who were here before may know the windows in these smaller areas are quite big.
The timetable had not been released and so it was quite a surprise that Dub Elements were the follow-up act of Lucy Furr, who concluded her set with tracks like “My Friends”. After all, this Spanish artist was a headliner and it was even more surprising because he actually played quite a hard set, for example Counterstrike’s smasher “Mindfuck”. We didn’t expect it, but this proved to be one of the best sets of the night. The same could not be said for Ed Rush & Audio, playing back to back for two hours. Occasionally, they dropped some nice tracks but overall it was a pretty lame set which did set the dance floor on fire when Noisia’s “Block Control” led to some mean pogo action. A great sight to witness from the balcony of the main area!
The wait was for Limewax to start playing some real heavy hitters. MC Dart announced him, pointing out that a live set would be out of the question due to some technical difficulties. Fortunately, this in no way diminished the impact of brutal tracks like “More Bazz”, “Kristall Weizen”, “Industrial Cooking Spray” and the mashup “Cleansed By Agent Orange”. Meanwhile, we paid a visit to the hardcore area, where fortunately the sound had improved drastically, but another downer was the temperature which quickly drove us back to the main area.
Katharsys and Donny would fight the next battle and did so with lots of own productions like “The Resistance”, “My Favorite Sin”, “Primitive”, “Symptomless Coma” and “Guidance”. Last but not least was the new version of “My Favorite Sin”, a cooperation between DJ Hidden, Peter Kurten & Katharsys. Love the new twist this track has been given! Traditions are meant to be kept and so this edition would also be concluded by organizer Thrasher, this time in collaboration with DJ Hidden. They opened with the latter’s track “Battlefield”, a collaboration with DJ Eye-D forthcoming on the PRSPCT label this summer. Afterwards, tracks like “I:gor - Icebreaker (Counterstrike Remix)”, “The Outsider Looking In” and “Phantom Dust” were responsible for the last drops of energy being spilt on the floor of this old grain silo.
Although we didn’t feel like this edition had topped last year’s in WATT, PRSPCT has a bright future ahead with these kind of locations. However, it should be clearly communicated which part of the building will be used, as they are known under different names. Other than that, we look forward to new names instead of the largely known Limewaxes of this world, how about the Russians who are doing such a terrific job for years now? We are confident that the sold out houses of the XL-editions will produce even more exclusive line-ups in future and look forward to the area hostings at various festivals in the following months.
