[Report] Third Movement 10 years Aniversary Tour (BE)

After editions in Holland, France and even Spain, it was high time for a Belgian edition of The Third Movement’s 10 year anniversary tour. And we had Suburb Soundz, an organization most known for their relentless hardtechno parties and activity in increasingly more styles like drum & bass and hardcore, to thank for this. Location was the Zappa youth centre in Antwerp, which we would grace with our presence for the first time tonight.

When we arrived at 22.30, the turnout was still quite low. The location had been divided by a black curtain on the right side. The part behind the curtain was even bigger than where the party was held, which clearly demonstrates the possibilities of this location. At that time, Manu Le Malin was warming up the crowd with his distinct slow but dark style of records. Once the lights had finally been turned off, it didn’t take long for Matt Green to get us a bit more hyped up with his breakbeat-influenced productions. This meant that by midnight, three of the most underground artists of the night had already passed by (N-Vitral opened the party at 21.00).

It was time for Sequence & Ominous to take over. This duo is usually known for their hellish tempo in early hardcore, combined with a less than obvious record choice. Beforehand, they had hinted about playing a millennium hardcore set, which we found quite fitting for this label night. Who knew they would take it this far? A stunning track selection with lots of seldom heard tracks from back in the days, all with an industrial touch such as “Hectic Fence - Blackmailing”, “Armageddon Project - Church Of Pentagram”, “Ophidian - Nurse”, “Punishment Beyond Death”, “WO III” and “D-Spirit – The Spirit”.

After a while, the style changed towards a more melodious approach with the definitive “Life From The Other Side”, “My Empty Bottle”, “Language Of Rythm”, “End Of Line”, “Seperated World” and “The Desolate One”. As you can tell, this was our absolute favorite set of the night and it lead to an amazing atmosphere on the dance floor with lots of clapping. It had been a long time since we had witnessed this in such measures, really great to see. Also, it had become quite busy in the meantime. The only minus was the fact that the sound was cut off after starting “Church Of Pentagram”.

Speaking of which, the sound system wasn’t all that great. It would fluctuate all through the night, sometimes hard, sometimes soft. D-Passion didn’t mind and played tracks like “Finally”, “The Signal (D-Passion Remix)” and the long forgotten ”De Spelregels” but it wasn’t enough to really call this an interesting performance. Fortunately, the same could not be said about label owner DJ Promo. He combined old and new tracks in a nice set with “Real Rude”, “Finishing Profiles”, “So Sick”, “Lying Through Your Teeth”, “Phreaking Electronics” and “The Tablet”. Afterwards, the area seemed a lot emptier, which, as we were told later, was probably due to a pretty serious fight. Too bad for The Wishmaster, who proved he’s got some excellent mixing skills and track selection with “Silence Surrounds Me” and “The Rule Of Cool”.

Then came the moment of truth for most visitors: Dj Hidden & Eye-D aka The Outside Agency had entered the building. As most of the drum & bass heads had probably chosen Hertz vs Tensionstep in Oudenaarde, it was questionable if the crowd would pick up these guys’ crossbreed style. It seemed to go perfectly well though, thanks to stunning tracks like “The Chaos Theory”, “Industrial Cooking Spray” and the new “Primitive” production on Sustained Records. So props to the guys from Goes-Noord for providing us with a serious closing set which Sandy Warez couldn’t top. About a quarter before the end of the party, we thought we’d call it a night and left this Belgian edition in good spirit. Too bad about the sound quality and lack of decoration, but other than that this was one of the better parties in the last few weeks and we would like to see it repeated in Bochum. TTM is “Far From Done”, as Sebastian Hoff would say.
