Max Enforcer & Waverider - Epic EP [TiLLTG002]
I love Max Enforcer's sound. His kicks are unique, rough and raw. The first track on Max Enforcer's (and The Beholder) new sub-label (Gold) which is aptly named "Gold" was an absolute hit for me. It had a perfect timing (with Decibel) which gave me such a nice, summer feeling.
I knew Tillt's new sub-label "Gold" would become pretty epic.
Personally, I have not really heard of Waverider, apart from the fact that he's an upcoming producer who has also done a co-production with Digital Punk. I've also been told that Waverider can stand his ground with his productions, so being able to co-produce alongside Max Enforcer should give him the boost he needs to stand out in the scene.
This EP consists of 2 tracks: Epic & Dilemma. Please don't be influenced by my views on a certain track as I'm sure everyone has their own taste.
We'll start off with the track "Epic". In my opinion, the name of the track isn't the feeling I get when listening to it, but we'll get to that later.
The track starts off a little plain and ordinary, with a soft reversed bassline and a few effects thrown in here and there. But honestly, apart from the effects (effect kicks, sounds, ...) used every 8 to 16 beats, I don't really think a tracks' intro should be judged too much. Most of the time, the only people that actually hear the intro is the DJ. The intro fades off to make room for the mid intro which starts off with a nintendo kind of sound on top of a choir pad, which I personally think sounds quite nice. This seems to be a perfect way to build up tension and atmosphere before the climax kicks in. When getting to the climax, we notice some dark sounds (the synth seems to be quite dark because it has been detuned a little), the melody, however, isn't the typical "dark" melody we're used to. To me, the melody has a slight euphoric feeling to it, which, mixed with the "dark" sounding synth, does create a special feeling.
The kick used in the climax is OK, it's a typical (yet dumbed down) Max Enforcer kick, which I do personally like. However in this case, I expected a little more 'umf' to it.
To sum it all up, I don't think this track brings anything new to the scene, but it doesn't take away from the fact that this is still a lovely release. The sounds are there, the atmosphere has been created. Well produced. However, as the title gives us the impression this track will be Epic, it isn't.
My personal rating is 7.5/10
The second track on the EP is called "Dilemma". In my opinion, this track should have been called Epic, and vice versa.
The intro starts off with a basic snare (and I think a very distorted bassline which gives the snare that extra depth). The distorted bassline then becomes a little more full, which leads to yet another (overly used) reversed bassline. But this doesn't bother us too much now, does it? The soft intro fades out into a male vocal asking a question "what if that moment affected us?", followed by some nice screech sounds and a soft reversed bassline kick with some extra effects thrown in every 8 to 16 beats. The reversed bassline slams into a massive kick which is nice and raw. Full of energy! I'm not into breaks all too much, especially when they're long and slow the pace down for party people. In this case the break is actually very nice, which starts with the vocal asking us the same question "where would you look for answers? None of us are in this alone". Underneath the vocal a nicely made arpeggiator (producing term for: a "stuttering" type of synth) kicks in which is also layered with a nice pad which adds for an epic build up towards the climax. The build up literally gave me goosebumps and awakened quite some interesting emotions and feelings inside. The melody is simple but very effective (it could've been a little stronger though). The kick used in the climax is a typical Max Enforcer kick, which I personally love. It sounds nice and raw, yet euphoric when mixed with the melody. The screech type sound used in both the intro and outro is awesome! I love screeches, and this one sounds nice and "full".
To conclude, I think this is the best track on the EP. It brings out certain emotions and euphoric feelings which in my opinion deserves the title "Epic".
