Last week, Wildstylez slammed some serious melodic Hardstyle back into our systems with the 6th release on Digital:Age. And what a whopper it was (and still is of course).
This week, Digital:Age has attempted to open our mind with something "completely" different. The first release (besides the "No Time to Waste" remix) from Pavelow, who is Bas from the Noisecontrollers.
Some people have labeled this style as Dubstyle. I'm not all for labels, because it does get quite confusing, but if it avoids confusion between the other gazillion styles out there and you feel you have to make the distinction, go ahead. Now, "Dubstyle" has been dubbed this way because of the close references to Dub Step, which includes some serious funky basses and what we call "Wobbles". Probably the most prominent Dub Step artist would have to be Skrillex (look it up). The "Style" in Dubstyle is derived from Hardstyle, because unlike Dub Step, the Dubstyle kicks are typical Hardstyle ones with a crunchy bass and hard punch. Besides Pavelow, I also know of another talented "Dubstyle" producer called Djen. You should check out his work on youtube. Not bad at all.
Now, hoping I haven't lost you through the history of this experimental style, we'll get to Pavelow - Beautiful & Rich.
If you're an avid Dub Step listener, you will most likely adore this release. In all honesty, I think it's great. Just because it's something different, yet still feels quite similar to things I've heard in the past. I think refreshing would be the correct term to use here.
Of course the vocals have been "borrowed" from Lady Gaga, but it's only two words, so we won't be having a fit now, will we? The whole flow is great. It's funky, it's still hard but on the otherside, I can really imagine it to be very difficult to dance to. I'm looking at my fist, wondering how I could possibly fist pump to this. I guess it's nearly impossible, so we'll just bob our heads and move left to right, give our bodies a little rest after all that jumping around.
You've got to love how the bass kind of wobbles around. Not the typical Dub Step wobble, but a nice slow, wavy wobble which really draws you in, if not almost sucking you in. The synth is definitely Hardstyle-ish and sounds great in combination with the slow but hard beats slamming into our awkwardly moving bodies as we attempt to dance.
This experimental style is great if you're in the mood for chilling out on a warm summers day yet still long for the hard kicks and beautiful melodies we're so lucky to have been given by Hardstyle.
Cool Fact: Pave Low is also an Attack Helicopter used to.. well... blow the living shit out of anything in its sights. What a beast! I'm guessing this is what Bas was aiming for. Blasting some hard funky basses through our fragile bodies and literally blowing the shit out of us with slow moving shockwaves. Mission completed!
I'd really like to hear what you all think of this style and of course, what you think of the track.
