Psyko Punkz – Bassboom EP [DWX-034]

1.Psyko Punkz – Bassboom

“We make the beats that go boom papi!” This track is very popular and a great one. The vocals from Starkillers – Discotheka are used. The mid has a flowing drive in it because of the vocals and phat kicks. The break is good, but not very special, although I like the way they bring in the melody. The most distinctive part of this track are the vocals. The climax is decent, but not very special in my opinion, but I like the way they bring in the second climax, the second melody doesn’t really appeal to me. But overall this track is very nice.





2.Nitro Man – Techno Prime (Psyko Punkz remix)

The original version of this track was released in 2004 on Sigma Records, being a b-side of Rhapsody in hell. The original version is one of my all-time favourites, that’s why I was interested in this track particularly. The remix is a nice new version of the awesomeness of the original in my point of view. The intro is short, but then the mid is really banging. The climax contains a new melody, a good one but it doesn't have much to do with the original anymore. Overall I can say that this track will make me smile when hearing it live, but it won’t give me as much of a rush as I would get when the original is spun. But then again, most DJs will tell you that the original doesn’t fit in a set with modern hardstyle, so this remix is a great for filling in that gap. Of course there will still be people who prefer this version.





3.Psyko Punkz vs Coone – Dirty Soundz (Ra-ta-ta)

For this track, the Psyko Punkz collaborated with Coone. It starts with a short intro, but not as short as usual this time. I like the break-beat part before the mid comes in.
The mid is decent, the vocals are not really deep but that’s no problem as long as it fits the track. And it really does I think, especially when they added the machine gun sound in the track. The overall track has a cool atmosphere, as most Psyko Punkz tracks have. There are two climaxes, both can be considered as great I think. The edit in the second climax really surprised me.

4.Psyko Punkz vs Sound Freakerz – Voices

This track is probably my favourite of this EP. I heard it the first time at the performance of the Psyko Punkz at Q-Base and I was immediately sold. Considering this track is based on one of my favourite trance classics: 'Cygnus X – The Orange Theme' (Which is based on Wendy Carlos’s ‘Title Music from a clockwork orange’ which also was based on a previous work namely Henry Purcell (1659~1695) – Music for the funeral of Queen Mary).

So shortly said, this melody goes way back. The mid is again, just banging as we would expect from the Psyko Punkz. The break gave me shivers the first time I heard it, the rainy sound with the soft synth and incoming melody creates a great tension. The chills top when the actual full synth kicks in after a nice distorted kick rhythm. The climax starts off with a short ‘Voices’ and I think the Psyko Punkz and Sound Freakerz got this melody to work out perfectly in a hardstyle track, including changing basslines.

The only thing I don’t like about this track, is that the climax in total is too short in my opinion, it would have been damn awesome when they topped this climax with another climax with some extra higher synths upon the original melody, but maybe that’s an idea for a remix.
The longer climax was expected because of that’s a strong point of the trance version, it just goes on and on. Although I must say that the synths they used really improved the feeling of the melody, but that is also logical because the trance version is already 16 years old.
